Alan Wilkinson was born in Barnard Castle and educated at Barnard Castle School and The Queen’s College, Oxford. Early in his teaching career, he joined the staff of his old school, where he later became Head of English. Well known as a local historian, Alan Wilkinson is the author of the definitive work, Barnard Castle: Historic Market Town (1998), and numerous other books, articles and pamphlets. Currently President of the Barnard Castle and District History Society and Vice-President of the Old Barnardians’ Club, Alan Wilkinson has frequently given talks on regional subjects. He has also led tours on the theme of Dickens in Teesdale for a wide variety of groups, including the cast of the Royal Shakespeare Company prior to their departure for the United States with a very successful production of Nicholas Nickleby. Alan Wilkinson represented Barnard Castle as a councillor for forty years and was Town Mayor four times; in 2010, he was made an Honorary Freeman of the town. Dotheboys and Beyond combines his long engagement with literature and education with his intimate knowledge of Teesdale and its past.
